OII Begins Review of Prior Cases
The WA State Office of Independent Investigations (OII) is now accepting requests to review prior investigations of deadly force cases.
The WCPA is proud to have had a role in creating the Office of Independent Investigation (OII), which aims to conduct fair and transparent investigations of police use of deadly force.
The launch of the OII shows that advocacy works, and that together, we can help create a more just future.
The OII is now accepting requests to review prior cases of the use of deadly force by law enforcement. Read more here: oii.wa.gov/prior-investigations-submissions
If your or someone you know plans to submit their case to be reviewed by the OII, please contact the WCPA at info@wcforpa.org.
We are eager to learn about families’ experiences with the new agency.

Truly independent investigations are only one part of achieving police accountability. The next part is independent prosecution. Currently, once an investigation is complete, a charging decision will be made by the county prosecutor.
Some county prosecutors have already made decisions on these cases. No current county prosecutor has ever charged an officer with murder under the current statute. This is why an Office of Independent Prosecution is so critical.
For the past three years, the WCPA has worked on creating an Office of Independent Prosecution. We will continue to support passing HB 1579, sponsored by Rep. Monica Stonier, in 2024.
